Head Start Benefits From Volunteers

Dorothy Corpron visits with Head Start students as part of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Stanley’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program has been a part of the Stanley School District for a number of years, providing volunteers to work with students to help with reading and other tasks. They are now expanding their efforts to add volunteers with the Head Start Program.

Head Start has classes Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Currently thirteen children ages three to five years are enrolled in Head Start in Stanley.

The volunteers will be reading and helping with creative projects like painting, drawing and sculpting with play dough. Basically, they will provide an extra set of eyes, helping in whatever ways possible.

RSVP program, says they will recruit

volunteers to help in any way that teacher Andy Beyer needs. Volunteers can then be organized to fit at times when they are available and needed.

Corpron will help coordinate her efforts with Kathy Dazell, who is the Parent Policy Council member in Stanley. In her position, Dazell is part of a council that meets the first Monday of each month in Minot. She is involved in the budget com-mittee. The council is involved with the hiring of staff, spending plans and fundraising efforts.

Dazell also helps plan a parent meeting once a month in Stanley. Those meetings make sure parents are aware of programs available with Head Start. Dazell uses these meetings to be a conduit between the

council and Stanley’s program to relate any concerns and issues.

According to Dazell, Head Start receives much of its funding through federal grants. Part of the grant process requires matching funds. That is where volunteers come into play. Volunteer hours are tracked and factored as part of those matching funds. Parent hours are also tracked for things like reading with students at home. Times are recorded and calculated into the levels that Head Start needs to meet their matching funds.

Stanley’s Head Start program currently still has openings for stu-dents. Anyone interested in more information can contact program coordinator Laurel Kleven in Minot at 701-725-4913 or 701-720-0900.
